It does seem like the U.S. has some hypocritical thinking about what it means be a nation and how to make sure that everyone, especially children and the elderly, have their basic needs met. It seems too easy to think only in terms of self rather than community.

It seems too easy to think that the government already provides basic support for anyone in need, or at least for the deserving poor, but this just isn’t true. Visit a neighborhood public school. Volunteer for a day, better yet, for a few hours per day for a few months. It will change one’s perspective about a lot of assumptions.
